A third follow-up following on from the hand-set locking post from Ewan’s meeting with the man from 3. Another quote:
Ewan: For Nokia handsets, why isn’t it possible to firmware upgrade 3-branded phones?
Fergal: You shouldn’t be able to do this with the security measures we’ve put in place — this comes back to handset cost and my answer to your previous question.
It is possible to firmware-upgrade SIM-locked phones as far as I’m aware and some of the Three-issue firmware versions have known bugs so why can’t we be rid of them like other networks? Obviously, given the level of quality control 3 like to do pre-release they’d need to repeat their testing, but some updates should be possible… no?
Watching the search-engine terms that are hitting this blog (thankyou WordPress.com and your stats page) there’s a few interesting patterns appearing, suggesting people still have 3 and / or X-Series questions.
Over the next few weeks there’ll hopefully be 2 or 3 opportunities for me to ask questions directly to the people at 3 so if you have any crackers drop them in the comments and I’ll add them to the list.
I’m a bit late to the announcement (it seemed to be common knowledge last night at the WebitPR Foosball event), but it’s here and my credit card is really burning a hole in my pocket…
You can now get the N95 (v1.2 software) on Three for some rather reasonable prices.
Looking at the quality of the videos Ewan took and this guy’s photos compared to a boggo standard digicam I sooooo want one…
In researching the Mobyko review I noticed a lot of positive comments in blog postings about Zyb - a similar service. Nothing particularly strange about that, but they’re all suspiciously similar one-liners and days after linking to the article my spam trap has just snagged an identical comment on this blog. I’ve just Googled the e-mail address the commenter supplied and it’s listed in another forum too… Only two postings, both recommendations for Zyb and only loosely relevant to the original thread. I call foul…
Who’s doing this? Is this really a market that’s so competitive these tactics are necessary? Or is this Zyb’s marketing guys with too much time on their hands?
As a kind of place-holder, here’s a couple of the things I’ve been doing since the last Blogger post that I’ll write up in more detail over the next few weeks:
After a significant break where real life got in the way of blogging, I’m back blogging again with a little bit of a backlog of news to catch up on.
After a long period of inactivity (more on that later) I’ve moved the blog to WordPress.com for better comment features and visuals. So far the only loss is blogging by e-mail which I could get back by hosting an installation of WordPress privately, but I don’t really want the hassle at the moment.
The Feedburner feed has been updated accordingly.
