Is X-Series data filtered?

3x-series.jpgIn the comments on my X-Series review over at SMSTextNews reader ‘DaveB’ commented that he thought Three were filtering the ports over which internet access could be gained.  However this afternoon I tested several ports below 999 using the built-in mail client (via my IMAP mail host which offers a proxy listening on all ports) and then accessed some web pages over port 8080 via the browser.  I’ve also installed Truphone and connected successfully over 3G using port 5062 (TCP and UDP).

So whilst I haven’t asked Three directly, I don’t think there’s any filtering going on… which is a good thing (and in-line with their very common-sense approach over X-Series).

I think that from what you have said before about the X-series and with the above questions answered, I will most definitely be moving over to X-Series silver/gold from my current Mobile Web add-on.

I posted this on the x-series review but I’ll post it again here

“I was just on the phone to the nice lady at three tech support and then with her supervisor and they told me categorically that there was no way to do anything other than access public websites, which I’ll take to mean if it isn’t port 80 or the smtp/pop3 ports then there’s no chance of doing it over 3. They never suggested any sort of upgrade option that might open it up for me, just told me that the only thing they promise is access to public websites.

So now we have a conundrum, why are some of us getting internet unlimited and the rest getting www unlimited?”

actualy, while I’m here, they also told me that even port 80 operates a white list so only approved websites can be seen, which I find odd because I’ve used all sorts of websites without problem

Sounds like they’re telling you the wrong thing to me… Met with some chaps from Three last night who acknowledged their overseas customer support was still pretty bad and a key area for improvement.

I’ve been told categorically by senior staff that it’s completely open and confirmed that on the 2 subscriptions I have access to. What particular problems are you having?

when on the 3G connection I can’t get any access to ssh or telnet or irc from my e61 which accesses them all perfectly well over the wlan (well, it doesn’t do anything on 6667 via any connection but we’ll burn that bridge when we get to it). customer support claims I will never get those services and, frankly, if the customer support is claiming that the services don’t exist then they might as well not exist for all the good they’re doing me being that the three store is no help either (lovely people, I ended up explaining to one of them why nhis hard drive is smaller than advertised).

for irc I’ve tried mirggi, wireless irc 2, virca and jmirc. ssh is via putty and telnet via mocha telnet.I’ve yet to try setting up relevant servers on port 80 and testing them

Bah… I had a hunch that (even though you’d said 3G) this might be Orange messing it up when you roamed onto 2G, but I’ve just forced my (non-three) handset with an x-series SIM into GSM-only mode for a few minutes and it all still works.

    What handset?

  7. Ben Says:

…and I’ve just tried it with a branded N73 (port 22) and it works too.

Perhaps try e-mailing the guys on the official blog at blog.xseries@three.com?

it’s an e61, I suppose e-mailing the blog will have to do
